what do you mean nobody???? beating out Queen and they should be tops. sheesh. nobody. yawn. like telling me nah, I didn't just hit 19 cars parked alot the site of the road and I'm still trying to drive it away (no shit this happened once to someone very drunk near the Winona (MN) State Univeristy. We saw him as he smashed the first parked car then slowly tried to drive it away as he scraped by every parked car there. we had to stay as witnesses. DO'H!!! too bad this was 1991 and no smart phones then. its only in me head. he had no fucking engine but going about 1/2 a mile an hour still causes damage if he refuses to get out of the vehicle

[Potential] nobody #2 here.

I'm still not getting through this. Whether to cast my vote for Zepp, or for the mighty Pink Floyd, who looks to have the Planet Suzy 2012 Battle Of The Bands cinched. This is a bitch.

But shouldn't one follow their heart and honor their #1 artist with their vote, regardless of whether or not that artist still has any chance of winning?

I don't know if statistics are going to mean anything, beyond the band that comes out on top; maybe they will be used for next years BOTB or something...? Maybe someone can persuade me or help me with a different perspective on how I am looking at things here, a better way to break a tie...

I too have not voted yet. Impossible for me to pick my #1 band, but I have figured a few things out along the way.


1. I will vote for Pink Floyd before the Beatles. You people posting endless Beatles youtubes ... despair. Not a knock against the Beatles -- of course they were the most influential band in history. But they only had 6 or 7 "rock" albums in their last 5 years. When you look at the body of work of Pink Floyd ... 27 years from Piper to the Division Bell, or even the 16 years from Piper to the Final Cut with Roger (for those not liking their later work) ... the edge easily goes to PF, a better Rock Band. Floyd had arguably only a couple clunker albums (e.g. Obscured By Clouds), far overshadowed by truly timeless classics like Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Animals and the Final Cut are among my most favorite "under-appreciated" albums, especially the former. Pigs and Dogs and Sheep, don'tcha know. Like David's guitar in "Dogs", and the guitar interplay in "Sheep" -- damn that shit is part of my soul now.

"Influence" is not the most important thing -- otherwise we should never have even started and Louis Armstrong would have walked away with this bitch from the get-go. All that said, when I think of "Best Rock Band", I think of a group kicking major ass on stage. Pink Floyd was awesome and amazing -- but other groups in this list were better in this respect.


2. Hendrix, and The Doors, are very similar in that if Jimi and/or Jim had graced us with their presence longer, they could have been more on the Top of the Heap. What they did was great though, and we're lucky to have that much. There are many members to the Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda great musicians/band, but these 2 -- along with Kurt and Nirvana -- lead that category IMHO. Some of you will disagree with my last inclusion. I don't care.


3. GNR and Iron Maiden simply do not belong -- shocking that Maiden is in 3rd place. That's the "metal vote", I bet all those folks would have voted for Black Sabbath, and maybe more. Maiden was good, sure, but not better than Sabbath in any known universe. GNR was only really good for 4-5 years. I guess you could say the same for the Doors, but Morrison had more talent in his pinky than in all the band-members of GNR combined.


4. Queen and Led Zeppelin are the "near-favorites" of a lot of people. If this round featured some kind of weighted picks -- e.g. pick your top 3 where #1 gets 3 points, #2 gets 2 pts, and #3 gets 1 pt -- I bet that Queen would be doing a lot better, given their performance in earlier rounds. For me, LZ were amazing, but in the big picture, just didn't have enough original music. What? Well ...


5. Best Rock Band Criteria, RF Style:

i. At least 10 years worth of studio albums, some of which must be amongst the best of all time.
ii. Unbelievable Live Performances, including kicking major ass, rocking many houses down, and at least one Live Album generally considered to be "one of the best of all time".
iii. Unbelievable songwriting and musicianship -- at least one member of the band for the latter.
iv. lots and lots of originality, i.e. groundbreaking music and can't be very much stolen/borrowed from other groups.
v. A lead vocalist who is a great frontman.
vi. Lots of drama, intrigue, band-mates fighting, drug use, and tours which are legendary.


Only one group fits these: The Who. My heart says to vote for them, but I want to make sure that Pink Floyd will win first over those others.
