![]() So, while I was looking up a album cover video for "Elevation", I stumbled upon this singer that was on the Aussie version of "The X-Factor" named Altiyan Childs. Now, I've never really seen "The X-Factor", partially due to my hatred for singing based competitions like "American Idol", but I think this guy is particularly talented. He's got a nice range of vocal styles, he's a great showman, and I think one of the more notable performances he's done is his cover of "Beautiful Day" by U2. If you like this, I'd suggest looking up his cover of "Living On A Prayer". He was sick apparently, but did a great job on that one as well. After a little research on Altiyan Childs, apparently he released an album a few years back. I'm going to have to check that out, but truthfully, not many great musicians have come from such competitions. Chris Daughtry was one of the biggest musicians to come from "American Idol", but quite honestly, none of his albums were that good. He was a very mainstream breed of rock and every song sounded exactly the same. He could do one thing well and that's what he stuck with. There were other talented musicians that came through the competition as well, and they seemed to have done worse. The only semi-creative vocalists that have come through in my opinion is Adam Lambert and Kelly Clarkson. Adam Lambert was especially talented, and I think he was a great showman as well. He has a creative mind that thinks outside the box and I like that. Kelly Clarkson was never my cup of tea, but she has done well also. I feel that these types of competitions narrow down music so much. There is the 'talent', being the singer, and then the guys behind him/her. And in such competitions, the band is insignificant. It's all about vocals. So, when one of these vocalists do make it big, there is no natural band dynamic. There are hired musicians, but the spotlight is all on the vocalist. Call me old fashioned, but that's not what a band is to me. They call vocalists the frontman for a reason, yes, but he's merely a face. Not the collective identity. I don't believe that bands should revolve around one member's fame. That's my problem with the new Guns N' Roses and that's my problem with solo projects like Vince Neil Band. Being a vocalist is truly an art, and some have talent while others don't, but there is so much more to music than singing. Instrumentation is a broad art within itself, and I think people owe it to themselves to get the full package-- a band that is together for a collective purpose, not the furthering of one member's purpose. |

![]() These chicks are some proud GILFs now. They definitely pwned the stage and had a winning image down when they were younger; no doubt they got far on looks alone back in the day. But I recently read an interview with guitarist Susanna Hoffs and The Bangles' bass player in Guitar World; they were talking shop and there is no doubt these fine ladies are highly intelligent and virtuous musicians, unfortunately a dying breed today. I sure could use an old lady. That lil Susanna...take care o' that real good... ![]() F#@kin wild! This shit scared me when I was a kid, still listening to top 40 radio when MTV hit the air. When Pretenders debuted, I doubt many casual listeners expected them to be capable of belting out punk, in the truest sense of the word, much less ready to put such a tune on their first album and having the label's blessing to do so. It showed the world that this was not just another simple pop rock outfit with little depth or intelligence and that they would not be joining the endless procession of artists that come and go like flavors-of-the-week. |

![]() Poll's closed.
Next round should be interesting- a murderess, a porn star, a heroine addict and a chick who died from a ham sandwich. An eclectic lot, to say the least.

![]() ^ Oh man, what a drag. But I'm sure you'll pull right through that soon enough, Urge. Be sure it wasn't something that you ate, though. Like maybe something indigenous to the area that you've never had before. Short of being tested and diagnosed by an M.D., it can be hard to distinguish sometimes between flu and food poisoning. I love traveling, though I have rarely been able to in my adult life, and that is always the big concern for me. I got sick as a dog when I was a kid, upon arriving in AZ during our move from NY. Fortunately it only lasted 24 hours but I felt like I was dying and I know it was just from being exposed to the allergens and microorganisms in the air of a foriegn environment.
Don't know what kind of internet connection you have going on but I am in AZ too and have been astounded at the last 3 years of broadband svc. I have gotten through Cox. I am online day and night, and I swear have only been down once and that was for just a matter of minutes. No technical difficulties or poor performance due to their service, either. They are hitting me for $54/Mo. though. For just a broadband connection. These media mogul mofos have it made; I swear, you look at the stats. and you see huge numbers, and so much of it is virtually pure profit. You are probably condemned to a wi-fi network of questionable integrity right now though, eh? Like in a cheap motel? ![]() (Sorry - you said you're not too chatty right now...but on the other hand is a Charles Bronson marathon. ![]() |
