![]() That was a good album. Sometimes Megadeth can be a bit much, but I think they hit their stride with this one.
More obligatory music. That's right. I just made Infant Sorrow follow The Runaways. I have to admit, Infant Sorrow is a pretty badass band name. "Oh yeah, mate, we're going to the Infant Sorrow show." It sounds awesome. It's ultimately pretty light, though, but it's not bad music if you can handle Russell Brand. ![]() Infant Sorrow sounds a lot better than my old band, Chinese Democracy. It's a badass name, and then GNR finally released the album that no one thought they would. It sucked worse than anything has ever sucked, and in turn it made my old band suck. Not that we didn't anyway. Our singer thought he was the songbird of our generation with his cheap Joe Walsh imitation, our guitarist tried to make my lyrics sound like fucking Linkin Park, and our drummer was nonexistent. Yeah, we did suck, but we weren't as bad as GNR's album. When "Chinese Democracy" finally came out, I was living with my best friend/the guitarist from Chinese Democracy (which was a few years later). I was strumming around on my bass one day after the album actually came out, and he said "Hey, why don't we get the band back together and call it 'Thunder Democracy'." I just shook my head and left. Haven't been in a band since. And really, I like it that way. I write and play for my own reasons. The only reason anyone has for being in a band is to get famous, and the music so often becomes corrupted that way. I never wanted that because I love music. When people I run into find out that I play bass, though, they're always like "Dude, we should jam." No. I don't jam. My music has a very specific vision, and everyone else just tends to fuck with it and turn it into their own. That's why I never got along in the band dynamic. I'm a cynical asshole, yes, but I'm like that because I actually care about the execution. |

I hope your not being literal. 'Cause that would really suck. In fact, in rock n' roll terms you wouldn't even have a band, really. And quit being so cycnical, dawg. And all that other negative shit. Things will come around. Or maybe they won't. But you know damn well you are just at the end of a line of 9,000,000,000,000 people who have tried to make it happen and failed miserably. And that doesn't even begin to describe how many did make it a little ways, or a little more ways, or even made the big time and it totally fuckin destroyed their lives. Or they would, at the very least, say it was a far cry from what they expected and was no walk in the park at all. You know I'm not saying their wouldn't be some good times, right? And making music is a wonderful thing. But so much more inevitably comes with that territory in our culture - esp. with the kind of music that we listen to. That we live. Who knows, Saints, we might see you on the cover of Rolling Stone yet. But don't hold your breath. And be careful what you wish for, because so many people are so convinced that they know what's good for them and they end up royally screwed, blued, and tatooed. (Though I know you'd like that last one, baby ![]() |

Nah, it was just a few friends from high school getting together and playing. I played bass and did the songwriting, and they only served to fuck up my ideas. Like, one time I wrote this song called "Spectre" about my conflict with religion starting as a child up through now. I had a very specific sound in mind for it. Josh, my former best friend and the guitarist of the band, found that it was too offensive. He wasn't even Christian. He was half-Apache and followed the Great Spirit. I'm talking about the protestant faith, and he's getting his panties in a bunch anyway. It has nothing to do with his religion. After the argument ended, however, we all decided to play it anyway. For some reason, Josh decided to sway from my instructions and make the riff sound exactly like "Cocaine" by Clapton. I fucking hate Clapton, and the sound I wanted was nothing like that. Mikey, our singer, tried to make it sound like high-pitched hair metal. I don't hate hair metal, but it wasn't the sound I was going for either. It was more of a dark, gothic type song, and none of them got that. As for not having a drummer, we just didn't know anyone who could play so it was just vocals, bass, and guitar. I've always wanted to learn to play drums, but the truth is that I don't know if I'm that coordinated. Quote:
And you're right, I may not lose sight of my love for music and I may have a good time, but I'm easily corrupted. As long as I have control of my music, I'll never be corrupted. Speaking of the cover of the Rolling Stone, I don't know anyone who has even heard of this band. They're high as fuck in every song, but it's good music. |

Have you listened to yourself? What makes you think that you could ever have a successful "band" (is the word 'collaborate' in your vocabulary?) or that anyone would want to stick it out with you? Yeah, yeah, I know - you have already answered this question in your own way. But I am convinced you are going to keep finding yourself in the same hole again and again, asking yourself the same questions and getting frustrated over the same old shit, time and time again. Like a broken record. We are birds of a feather, my friend, and it takes one to know one. But the difference is: I really have been free from some of this shit for almost 20 years now, 100% free from any substance being the prime requisite. There is no such thing as almost clean; like they say, you are either pregnant or you're not. But don't get me wrong; I still have a lot of the same behaviors and some of the same mess. I am what they would call a dry drunk in AA. I no longer live by many of the principles that saved my ass in the first place and I have a big lack of a lot of good things in my life because of that. And that is why I recognize this deficiency in others like me. Quote:
Textbook addict, Saints. And WTF - it makes for good music sometimes. But look at how that INVARIABLY turns out. (Like Axl's album if you're lucky..?) You already said it: You don't even want to be a team player at this point. But I think you know how futile that attitude is, and that it is quite unlikely that you would ever be able to pull it all off by yourself. In fact, it would be impossible, because even if you were a true composer and learned how to play every instrument yourself there would still come the time when you would have to loosen the creative reigns, let others in, and irust and rely on them completely. Musicianship goes beyond a little compromise or swallowing a bit of pride sometimes. Just ask any successful artist how they've had to bleed. And doesn't a successful life require these kinds of things from time to time? [BTW - I just drank for part of the last 18 months before hitting the most hellish rock bottom (then did it on top of psych meds ![]() ![]() P.S. - I'm not gonna argue with you or try to re-justify anything I have said here. You can take it or leave it. I only wish to be helpful, please don't take anything as judgmental. |

![]() Why have you got to make me feel like Darth Vader standing over my former bandmates in Cloud City telling them that I'm their father.
![]() Yeah, I'm a cynic, sometimes an asshole, and I'll own up to that. A lot of it comes from not being able to control my own life as a child. How my day went depended on how my parents' days went, and they never had a good day. As an adult, I've always scrambled to control as much of my life as I could, and that extends to my creative work. I truly do use music as my expression, and I freak out when my expression and feelings are tainted and meshed with the expressions of others. Like I said, I would never try to control or tamper with anyone else's work, but I'll defend mine at all costs. The feelings in songs can't be shared by a band's members. The feelings are that of the writer. I felt them in the moment of the meantime, and that memory means something to me. I feel that the memory is tainted when someone else throws ideas into a song because it's no longer what I felt. Yes, I was a user when all of this was going on, but I understand my actions to this day and I still feel the same. In truth, I think I transferred addictions. I haven't touched drugs in years, but I'm hardly straight edge. I still drink, I still smoke, and I think that's alright. I know my limits now, and that's as far as it goes. Alcohol is a drug (my dad is an alcoholic and has been since 'Nam), but I really don't drink that much. I have been lately, sure, but it's been four nights since I've had anything. I did spiral for awhile, but it was just stress, and once I realized it I nipped it in the bud. Just because I no longer partake in drugs doesn't mean I'll condemn current users, though. I have friends who are current users. I'll leave if coke is around, but I don't mind seeing anyone use anything else anymore. Yes, they're addicts, but how would I have felt if everyone turned their back on me when I was using? Well, I know how I would've felt because they did. Haylie was the only one who stood by me. We got high together and we got clean together. I stayed clean, though, and she unfortunately didn't. Because of her death, I no longer shun addicts. If they want to continue in their current path, I won't try to change them, but if they truly want to get clean, I'll help them. I should've been there for Haylie and I fucked it up, but maybe I can save another life. Robby, a guy that was friends with everyone in the band, was actually crashing on my couch when she died. He was trying to kick speed cold turkey, and he was a fucking madman. I got kind of vicious with him about his drug use before I learned that Haylie had passed. After I found out, I kind of withdrew to my room for most of the week and we had no contact. When I was leaving to go to her funeral, I came out, gave him a hug, and asked if he wanted to go. I figured that there would be nothing more sobering than going to the funeral of a girl who had OD'd. He came with me, and he no longer had withdrawal symptoms. Haylie's family shot me looks that made me think I was going to be crucified, and her mother actually came up in a crying fit saying it was my fault, and Robby said nothing. When we got back to my place, he packed up and left. He showed up about a month later and thanked me. He said that I might not have been able to save Haylie's life, but I saved his. He needed to see what I showed him at her funeral. Since then, I've tried to do the same for my friends. Robby's still clean to this day. He got into speed trying to stay awake up while driving cargo trucks up in Alaska, and he got addicted. He's still driving, but he's now just pulling over to sleep instead of using. Oh, I'm not taking it in a bad way. I think it's good to talk this kind of thing out. Though I may not show it, I do appreciate your concern. |
