If you're serious about this Urge ... I mean, I wouldn't blame you a bit for not making any changes, there's no way you could have ever done it 100% for everyone, and I think you may be opening up a serious can of worms with this offer ... but anyway if you're serious about making another round, I'd like to throw my vote in for the following, and ask you to give them some consideration.


Compiled this list in 5 minutes, using artists I've posted, hehe. Give me more time and I'm sure I could come up with more. Oh, this is also in order of how much I think they should be part of this competition.


1. Radiohead
2. Joni Mitchell
3. Little Feat - the best American rock band of the 1970s
4. Coldplay
5. Meat Loaf - the 4th highest selling album of all time!
6. Stone Temple Pilots
7. Steve Miller Band
8. Jackson Browne - I'd love to say Warren Zevon too but let's get JB 1st.
9. Bob Seger
10. The Carpenters


In reality, I don't think #6-10 could ever advance, but I've already been proven to not know my head from my ass. There are others (e.g. Pixies, Stone Roses, TooL, Seal, Violent Femmes, Portishead, etc), but I don't think they would meet your qualifications, nor would they have any chance here. REM might do okay, but the Foo Fighters are overrated IMHO.

Yeah, one of our local radio stations in Florida has a weekly program "One Hit Wonders".

I'll have to start taking notes because many of those hits are quite good, although the artists I never remember.

I think it would be better to have a separate thread for the best "one-hit wonders" instead of dedicating another week to this one. As far as the others that haven't been included, I've been adding my fifth votes for the ones that I would have liked to see on the list (or just liked to introduce to others). So far I've suggested Tool, Styx, Supertramp, Fiona Apple, Bob Seger, Corporate Avenger, Leonard Cohen, Acid Bath, Sublime, Ween, Shatner, and The Lost Fingers (pointed out as a good cover band in multiple posts).. It appears that I've missed a couple of weeks..

There are a lot of modestly successful songs that get a revival due to movie soundtracks and ads. Doesn't mean they were all that good to begin with.

Supertramp and Seger would probably be the only 2 on that list to qualify.

Steve Miller, Stone Temple Pilots and maybe Meatloaf(although I really think he has a bigger rep than he deserves, due to the artwork on his first album and his appearance in Rocky Horror). The Carpenters! Serious! Easy listening to the hilt!

Not really, because it can only be done once. Once into the second preliminary rounds, the rounds are locked and can't be added to.

Speaking of Karen Carpenter, if she had shared that ham sandwich with Mama Cass, they might both be alive today!

Tool won grammies for "Ænima","Schism", and the album 10,000 Days; Styx is just awesome (my opinion anyways). I was just introducing the others besides Supertramp and Seger. I wouldn't mind seeing how Sublime would do in a face off, but their career ended with Bradly's death even though they became more well known afterwards (their live shows almost always sucked because Bradly couldn't stop tying off the dinosaur).

But Into the Night's revival didn't have to do with a movie or an ad.
Rather it was because a Los Angeles DJ in 1989 added the song to his playlist, spurred on after he heard a Where Are They Now radio program out of Arizona. On that Arizona program the most popular question was whatever happened to the guy who sang Into the Night.
This ultimately led the song back into being a hit.

That's what would be a natural revival rather than an artificial one due to some movie, or Apple using a song in a commericial.

Mardones certainly did have a voice going on.
