Ah, I too was not sure what to make of your initial post. My intent in creating this thread was not "body shaming", and I hope you were not offended by any of the posts.

I am genuinely curious. I've watched this trend grow with confusion and I'm still confused. Tattoos in my past experience have always been either a tribal custom or a way of people expressing their outsider status. As my mother put it, the only people who got tattoos in her day were bikers and sailors. Not adorable little girls.

I was asking from a general, social POV, but specifically I was addressing it from the POV of a porn fan. Porn is fantasy, and frankly tats can interfere with that fantasy. It's hard to accept someone as innocent when they have a full back tat. Placement is not irrelevant. The vast majority of people don't get tattoos on their faces (not yet anyway), but tattoo placement seems to be getting less and less limited to out-of-the-way areas like the shoulder blade, where it can be more easily hidden. They're more and more "in your face".

It can't indicate an "outsider" status anymore, when everyone is getting one, so I'm still left wondering, what are tattoos for? Why have they become a kind of rite of passage?

Thus it became "me too" thing. A fashion accessory. Used to be niche, now common.

Those thick square glasses would be ridiculed only a few years ago as "ugly four-eyes", now they are trendy. Only a few years ago men would be ridiculed for those lumberjack beards, now every celebrity has one (even Austrian drag queens, LOL). Thankfully these aren't permanent.

Niche/extreme becomes mainstream. That's how I'd describe present fashion. Here lies part of the answer.

I can buy the fashion accessory argument. While I don't like inking on female skin, I can sometimes step back an appreciate the art.

Sometimes however I am left flabbergasted, as with Elaina Raye. I had this chick down on my list, until I saw her hideous tattoos. If the "sleeve" and the random scrawlings weren't bad enough, that diamond in between her sweet little tits is just nasty.



It looks as though it was drawn by a blind six year old.
