The despecialized editions are great and are pretty much what fans wished Disney would've given us when when they did the DVD and Blu Ray box sets to the prequels and original trilogy.

Fans are so divided on Disney, but that is one of the few things I believe ALL Star Wars fans would be happy with. The original, non-altered films.

Back in the 2000s I swear there was a time when the movies got a DVD release with a bonus disc that had the original theatrical versions that were unaltered. I can't remember the year for sure or if they were in wide screen, but I remember watching the original Empire Strikes Back years ago from that DVD set. That's what I was hoping Disney would re-release. You get the special edition and original version together. Everyone would be happy with that!

You're not going to be disappointed. Those guys who put out those versions did a pretty damn good job at restoring everything from the old LaserDiscs, Telecine transfers and even VHS tapes.
I got the original 17-20 GB versions that I burned onto 3 Blu-Ray discs. Never watched the new Blu-Ray transfers ever again.
It's definitely a great upgrade

No, no.
They're professionally made. There was a huge team of professionals working on this project, so it's definitely not a rip-off.
They even sold actual original Blu-Rays for awhile, but then to avoid conflicts with Disney, they just decided to offer them as downloads, via torrents and other sources.

Last I heard, Disney has launched a streaming platform for 4K movies titled Disney+.
I saw yesterday a video on Youtube about a guy reviewing the original trilogy that Disney is offering in 4K with Dolby Atmos and HDR.

It seems like Disney is planning on releasing a 4K Blu-Ray boxset, sometime over the next year.
But very little is said about the source for these new scans.
Bet $1 that they will probably just rely on the bastardized scans we already saw/have, upscale them to 4K, add some DNR, pump up the black levels and just stack them on a plastic case and call it a day.
But, yeah. I don't see any valid reason why they couldn't offer the original unaltered versions of the movies on Blu-Ray.
I don't think that the original prints got destroyed or lost, during all these years.
But, either way, with Disney acquiring Fox, we will probably see many shitty things and cheap knockoffs and cash-grabs, along the way (i'm looking at you Daniel Craig Bond 4K set

).
I'm still hyped for the new ALIEN movie. Hope they will leave Ridley Scott do his job and not ruining the franchise, with a last-minute PG-13 cut/edit.

Speaking of Ridley Scott, he kinda fell into the same trap as Lucas with doing several different cuts of Blade Runner.

The 'Final Cut' version is controversial among fans cause he pretty much waited over 2 decades to decide that the fan theory of Deckard being a replicant was true. He took a movie that was about a sociopath finding humanity from a machine he had to hunt down, then completely altered it and changed the entire meaning of it. To someone seeing it for the first time, they probably enjoy the Final Cut more than I did. To each their own. There's so many edits of Blade Runner, you can find one you like if you don't care for the changes in the Final Cut. It's pretty amazing how many versions of Blade Runner was released over the years.

Luckily though; the Blade Runner DVD and Blu Ray sets usually have all the official released versions of the film, so if you don't like the Final Cut, you can watch any other version. It even has the original versions with the voice over (some fans like this cause it gives the movie something of a noir feeling, other fans find Ford's narration of the lines to be cheesy) and happy ending that the studio forced into the film. It's hard for me to really complain, cause these DVD sets are what should've been done with the original Star Wars films. Instead, Lucas made it clear he wanted the Special Editions to become the only ones in circulation.

Blade Runner like Star Wars has a fan made version that some folks find to be the superior and absolute best version. It combines stuff from ALL versions, usually getting rid of the happy ending or voice over and adding in essential deleted scenes (the big one being where Deckard takes the test).

Anyways, enough of my rambling here. Hats off and kudos to the fans using their talent and skills with editing to give us their amazing edits. It's really cool to see how far a group of people love Star Wars and Blade Runner to the point they make all this wonderful stuff for us.
