![]() How about a Black week, a Thrash week, Hardcore week and so on. Then in the end the survivors mosh it out. Only thing is, you can only do 17 choices per individual poll.

I am pretty sure the winner will not be a veteran band from the 70s and early 80s, but by including such acts in the competition we are only paying respect to the Bands that were a big inspiration to more recent acts. Metal as it is now did not all of a sudden pop out of the blue: it is the expression of musical evolution. The whole concept of Heavy Metal is older than many imagine.

![]() It's hard to know what to do with the bands like Zep, Purple, Hendrix. I think a lot of people wouldn't consider them metal, but they are the forefathers. I have the most respect for them, not just because they're great but because without them some of my favorite bands might not exist.
Here's maybe how the first round could go using all 17 of the available poll slots... Round 1 - Metal Forefathers Alice Cooper Black Sabbath Blue Cheer Cream Deep Purple Jimi Hendrix KISS Led Zeppelin MC5 Montrose Rainbow Scorpions Ted Nugent The Kinks The Who Thin Lizzy UFO Sabbath is a tough one because they are straight out metal, imo, while the others are not. They did form in 1968 though which is before some of the others. |

![]() If I could, perhaps some possible alternate candidates, such as Iron Butterfly, Budgie, or The Stooges, could be discussed. But the list as-is looks good. I'm assuming Round 2 will feature NWOBHM groups? |

![]() Yeah man, we need suggestions and input. I was just throwing out a possible starter poll. I wish we could have more bands in each poll but I think 17 choices is the maximum in polls here, and keeping each sub genre separate until it's time for the final battles will keep things nice and clean.

On the whole genres thing, this will hopefully start the ball rolling on which to include (and please, lets not have a poll about what genres we have :-D) If we start off chronological, we can have the major genres of their time: - forefathers/early heavy metal - NWOBHM - Thrash/speed After this it starts becoming chaotic. You could start breaking it down as: - early and Norwegian black metal (Venom/early Bathory, then the norwegian church burners) - death/grindcore (Florida scene etc) - black-metal offshoots (viking/battle etc) - death offshoots (melodic, technical etc) - metalcore and offshoots Where do we go with the whole black/death morass of sub and crossover genres? I generally prefer the evolved genres that mix in other styles than the original forms, but the original genres were definitely influential. After that, we could have your more specialised genres: - folk (does blur heavily with black when the Scandinavians get involved) - progressive forms (from Dream Theater to Opeth to Meshuggah) - power (Helloween, Dragonforce etc) - nu/(c)rap metal - gothic/symphonic - glam Should we do anything with punk which has been a huge influence of several types of metal. Any others? Sod it, looking back at this post it may well be easier for everyone to just submit a list of n bands and have done with it :-) |

![]() Hell, I don't think we need a category for Early Norwegian Slightly Folk Partly Melodically Tainted Black Metal. It's just gonna be Black Metal, Thrash, Power etc etc, the main genres.
And yes, punk should be included. Punk has influenced like 95% of my favorite bands. It should probably be polled before NWOBHM. I'm thinking about doing this thing in a whole new thread. I can tell that there is only a handful of us that even open this one anymore. Metal Forefathers Influential Punk Hard Rock ? AC/DC and the like? NWOBHM Black Metal Death Metal Thrash Metal Hardcore Crossover Traditional Metal Power Metal Christian Metal Viking Metal Doom Metal Gothic Metal Industrial Metal Glam Metal Nu Metal I know there's more but this is just for fun, it's not according to Hoyle. We might as well just call the guys who did Metal Evolution. |

![]() Agreed its for fun, so what the hey, even though you've ended up with more genres than I did even after splitting up Black and Death into "trad" and "offshoots", I'll buy your list and second it for the sake of getting the show on the road.
I'll reserve the right to skip the christian round though - that stuff pisses me off no end ![]() |

![]() I don't remember anyone ever calling MC5, The Kinks, or The Who heavy metal. And I still wouldn't.
Nor would I put Cream or Hendrix in that category. There were a ton of other blues-influenced psychedelic rock bands, Yardbirds, Amboy Dukes, Vanilla Fudge, etc. that no one considered heavy metal. Even if some of their members later went on to play music considered metal. However, most people called Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, heavy metal at the time. I even remember Jimmy Page's objection, calling it a "bastard term". |
